So, I set off the smoke detector…

I was wondering when i was going to do that and at last, a couple of hours back – Mission Successful!!!

We had chicken in the oven, Ashwin opened it so i could spread some more gravy on it and lo, a thick fume of smoke came out, and then – CHAOS. There was this beeping i had never heard before, it kept going on and on and on and then i realized it was the smoke detector!!! Had to take a towel right to it and fan off the smoke around the detector. It was crazy!!! But once we got it to stop beeping, we sat down, had a good laugh and well, started eating the chicken hoping the FDNY would not turn up at our place.

All said and done, i realized the underlying effectiveness of the Fire Department of New York. There are a number of times when i’ve seen or heard their trucks racing down the street to attend to some distressed person with a fire in the apartment or just a smoke alarm going off in some random place. Their quick and effective response only tells one about how seriously the US Government takes people’s lives. Its interesting how everyone is polite here. You walk down the street and you ll get at least two people asking how you are doing. This one time, the very first time actually, we were walking down the 3rd avenue with all my luggage and the guys stopped to get some supplies. I stood outside the shop and a guy came up to me and asked ” comin or goin ?” And i replied “Comin” and he said “Welcome Back” and he was off.

The best start to a year and a half , i wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

Singapora!!! Part 2 – Day 0

After a lot of speculation and a lot of time waiting for Gana to receive his passport, we were all set to apply for our visa.

A WEEK BEFORE WE HAD TO FLY 🙂

In the mean time, we were busy taking care of other details. Speculating about the time we would spend there and the cash we would be carrying and the general rants and raves. It turned out we couldnt get the malaysian visa here. TOO BAD. Cause of Gana’s Passport coming in late and me misplacing the visa photos and the general traffic situation in chennai.

Well, there we were in college. Completely oblivious to the fact that we were going to be flying to Singapore later that night. It was like any other day in college, nothing special.  Except a couple of leers from Kulla Karthi and a lot smiles and half a dozen teachers not being allowed to teach at our expense. Nothing out of the ordinary.

On we went to the airport that night and through the baggage check, we were 5 kilos over the limit. Off came the coat and on it went on me. Gana reshuffled some of his luggage and voila, we were just 3 kilos over. The good guy behind the counter decided to overlook the extra. Turned out only half the flight was full. After the busy immigration and the security checks and double checking if TIGER AIR really did exist, well our fears were out to rest on seeing the Airbus A3xx standing proudly on the tarmac. Ah, BLISS!!! 🙂

Live in the jungle , WE DO !!!

Well, i dunno how many others have this problem, but we sure do, wanna take a guess at what it is?????

yes, M-O-N-K-E-Y (monkeys, actually). . .
not just one or two, but families of monkeys roam our college campus. This makes life at college both interesting and a little dangerous… Its always fun when a monkey enters the class when the teacher is busy teaching, every one seems to start giggling for apparently no reason at all, and then suddenly the teacher notices!!! well, as you know, mayhem erupts…

i ve got some pretty good shots of the monkey’s antics in the class rooms… i ll definitely be putting up some of them later, bur for now, the dangerous and some more funny monkey stories…

Well, the monkeys aren’t sportive all the time, they don’t just run away if they are shooed, at times, they turn back and start hissing back at us, and, yeah you ve guessed it, its time for us to run… and none of us has been bitten until now, thank god!!!

I remember this particular day, one of the classes was going on and the monkeys entered from the gal’s side, one of the smaller ones picked up a spectacle case of a girl’s and that is when the teacher started hitting the table with a book and scared the little fellow away.,.. with the case of course… i didn’t miss a beat and took some shots of the scene(i did get those “Looks” from the girls though)…

Well, it chop chop for now, gotta go…

The first day at coll…

Well… after crossing the initial hurdle, I went to bed …

Only to wake up an hour later than I had planned… I had about an hour left to get ready and go to coll… and as usual, I couldn’t make it… do the very first day in college, I was late….

After lotta looking around, I finally found the chart of the class room allocation, looked up my class room and took a good 10 mins to find it and walk in…

There was Mr.Stanley in there, addressing the classs… he asked me o come in without any fuss and I was lucky enough to get a seat in the back of the class… sitting near a guy called Selvan….

Stanley asked us to introduce ourselves, but he wanted us to remember each other , so the first person had to get up tell his name, the next was to tell the 1st’s name and then his/her own name, the third had to say the 1st and 2nd’s name and then his/her name and so on…

So, this guy stood up and said the names of the first three guys and the said, “ Hai Friends.. My name is R-A-J-E-S-H , Rajesh” and the whole class burst out laughing… that is how I met the cool dude from IT, Rajessh…

The whole day went off in introductions itself… we had quiet an odd collection of teachers… but they were a good team, and as it happened, Stanley was our class counselor(The poor teacher who had to solve all the student’s problems and also the staff’s problems with the students) not only that this guy was a good photographer and he was favoured for field trips and stuff… that’s how we got our first ever “get out of college during class” break…

Ragging … For the first and last time…

A week later…

We had no ragging till this point of time… as it happens, we were put along with a batch of final year students of I don’t remember which department in the college bus and there was no staff either… so, this guy Varun of the final years (who happened to be the treasurer of the leo club) started turning the wheels of his fellow students..

So , they called a guy Anoop of my batch and told him to go propose to a girl from their year.. he went , looked at the girl, decided she was not worth it and proposed to the girl sitting next top her… came back and told the seniorstaht the gal they showed him was not good and so he proposed to the girl sittin next to her who looked a lot better… that shut them up!!!

We all went to this Aashram wher there was a temple and lotta bramin kids learning the Vedas… had a nice time there with the old people from the oold age home, which was right behind the temple there… they were very hospitable…

Later on, we went to a school and bought them stationaries and some biscuits… Took a lot of photos there and started back for coll… (Those photos were displayed on the notice board of the first year block for about two years!!!)… WElll, we got the afternoon off with full attendance, we lazed our time away and came back to the hostel…

Nothingg much happened that night, just met almost all of the guys in the hostel(first years tat is) and found out that a school buddy , Arun was also here in the same college and the same dept…. some of my school mates were also there, well, the day went well… had a gala time and a nice long sleep….

The First Day … or should i call it ‘The First “NIGHT” ?!? ‘ …

Let me take you back in time…

2 years exactly…

Strange…!!! Seems as if it was just yesterday that i joined my college…

As usual, my knack of getting into trouble as soon as i step into a place took over…

After sending my people back home, i was sitting in my room all alone(no roomee in my 1st semester…) I thought it would be good to get know some people in the hostel… so off i go, got to know my neighbors first… it was Krishna and Ganesh who caught my attention at first… Krishna the dude from delhi who didn’t know anything about tamil and Ganesh the guy from namakkal who didn’t know anything even close to hindi… Odd pair of roommates… !!! Started speaking to them and found out Krishna was from DPS ,Delhi (No explanations required here i guess…) so we went and had dinner together, it was the worst one i had ever taken till then(Didn’t know at that time that i was in for more!!! Got used to it eventually though…) so, we took a few bites and left the mess… we hadn’t been in our room for 20 minutes, the resident tutors(Thats what they call those stupid staff that stay in the hostel) call a general meeting for the first years in the block… To our astonishment, the whole group of tutors where there… thsi guy Sasikiran(senior lecturer from my dept. also known popularly in the hostel as “akka”) started by saying,”Welcome to SVCE, we have a very important announcement to make . We have just got the communication from Anna University that students will not be allowed to keep or use mobile phones within the college campus …” At that moment a school friend sent me a message, and lo there was the crazy laughing ringtone from my N-Gage !!!! All of us started laughing and silenced my phone quickly by pressing a button.. “.. As i was saying, this rule has not come from our college but from the Vice-Chancellor of the university ..” And again I got a message… ‘Oh my god’ was all i could think and i took my phone and switched it off…

“THIS WILL BE DEALT WITH VERY SERIOUSLY, YOU HAVE PLANNED THIS ALL, YOU WANTED TO DISRUPT THIS MEETING, YOU HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED COLLEGE YET… BLAH BLAH BLAH” akka shouted at me… i was confused weather i was suppose to laugh or apologize , so i decided to try and apologize, but he wouldn’t hear of it… wanted to confiscate my phone… at last i got fed up and told him to go to hell and went back to my room … …. Well, as it happens with all the places, the story was out into the college the next day… I simply fail to understand how i acomplish to pull off these stunts!!!!
